Mission Opportunities at Mechuwana

Use us, O Lord, to change the world.

Mechuwana mission work camp is located on the site of Camp Mechuwana, the United Methodist Camp of Maine - in Winthrop, 15 minutes west of Augusta, Maine.

For more information about the missions program or to request an application, please contact Ned Crockett or Norman Thombs at the camp office.

Work Projects include:

  • Housing Repair for the needy (roofing, painting, drywall, handicap ramps, etc.)
  • Working in area clothing ministries, food banks, and soup kitchens
  • Projects on-site at Mechuwana (this summer we will be working to build the new Mechuwana Memorial Chapel)
  • Renovations and repairs of local church buildings
  • Teaching vacation Bible school in a rural church setting
Skills needed for these projects range from basic carpentry and painting to specialized skills such as plumbing and sheet rocking.  The most important skills are enthusiasm and willingness to work as a team.  After your group registers for a week, we will send you an inventory worksheet so you can let us know what skills your group is bringing with you.

Who Should Apply?

Mechuwana Mission Camp welcomes youth and adults - youth fellowships, young adult groups, adult groups and intergenerational groups.  For youth groups - we ask that you bring one adult for each five youth attending.  We are able to accommodate groups of approximately 30 people in the Missions Building.  Smaller groups can certainly apply and we may be able to house two smaller groups at one time rather than one big group.

Work Camp Costs for Winthrop
The cost is $225 per person which includes: room, board, and materials. There is a one time group deposit of $100.

Work Schedule
Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a break for lunch. The normal work schedule consists of four days of work and one day (Wednesday) for exploring Maine.  Some areas past groups have visited include: the mountains, ocean beaches, lighthouses, L.L. Bean, Freeport shops, State and National Parks, etc.

Room & Board:
Housing is usually in the upper two floors of the Missions/Retreat building. This building has six bedrooms with a total of thirty beds, three showers, and four toilets. Some groups may be housed in the cabin areas at camp rather than the Missions building.  The cabins have electricity and are within walking distance of the bathrooms/showers.

Meals are served in the camp's dining hall. All food and cooking is supplied by the camp. Mission work campers have an opportunity to swim, boat, and hike during free time.

Wednesday is traditionally a day off from work so that groups can tour areas of Maine. Some areas past groups have visited include: the mountains, lakes, ocean beaches, lighthouses, L.L. Bean, Freeport shops, State and National Parks, etc.

Camp Activities:
Evenings are yours for exploring Camp Mechuwana.  We will make swimming and/or boating available if requested.  You are also invited to Thursday night's staff campfire - the time in the week when all of the camps that are in that week get together for singing, skits, worship and stories.  If your group has a song, skit or story to share, please let us know and we will be happy to add you to the list.  Also, many other camps have programs (soccer games, musical productions, art galleries, etc.) to share and you will be invited to attend those if you wish.  Usually we have three or four camps running concurrently during each week of summer camp.  There is never a lack of things to do, that's for sure!

Spiritual Growth
As we go out into the world and work for the sake of others in the name of Christ, it is vitally important that our spirits are renewed each day as we grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.  Each group is encouraged to engage in daily study and worship.  Assistance is available with this if requested.

We are grateful to the people who worked on the new waterfront swim area ramp.
A great addition to camp!  Thanks again to all!!!

Has your group been to Mechuwana to work on a missions project?  If you have pictures to share that you would like posted on this site, please email them to Beth at mechuwana@aol.com.  We would love to hear your missions camp story!
