Mechuwana Alumni News

This page was created so that Mechuwana alumni (campers, counselors, volunteers, staff) can contact one another and find out what they are up to. If you name is not on this page yet, we ask that you email your contact information (name and email) to Beth at beth@mechuwana.org. She will add your information to this alumni page as soon as she receives it. Please list your name and email address and what years you were at camp. Also include a little bit about what you are up to if you would like that added. Thank you!

If you haven't yet joined the "Friends of Mechuwana" program, which is raising money for our permanent endowment fund, we encourage you to do so.  For as little as $10 a month, you can ensure that this important ministry is around for many generations to come.

I have attended camp since the age of 8, it was then that I very happily moved myself into both the Colwell and camp family! I would go to camp all 8 weeks of the summer attending various camps often not going home between them at all! Charlene would do my laundry and send me back! I loved it, it was my safe place. A place I knew would welcome me with open arms any time I came to visit. I still attribute my years at camp for shaping me into who I became as an adult. I still have my childhood friends from camp, 2 of whom I can call the very best of friends Bodie and Sean. I currently dean jr/sr high special needs camp, I know... I can't believe it either, Me a Dean! I live in the Bangor area with my wonderful husband Dan, our dog Cocoa, and kitty Reese! Feel free to drop a line anytime!

I've been working on the waterfront at camp since the summer of 1999. During the last couple of years I've enjoyed going back on the off season to chaperone rallies. Currently I'm working as a high school French teacher in Sanford.

I applied to be a camp counselor in the US from Australia with no idea where I would end up.1996 was my first year and it had such an amazing effect on me I went back for 4 years working on the waterfront, teaching swimming and boating first with Marc then with Rosalea. The next 4 years gave me such wonderful experiences not only with the campers but the staff who I worked with and adored. I still class these people as my friends and it's only due to the distance of our countries that i am unable to see everyone frequently. To see the smiles on the faces of the kids each summer as they came back to camp was enough to tell me the pilgrimage of 30 hours to get from Sydney Australia to Winthrop Maine was worth every second. I have many many photos of my time at camp including the 50 year celebrations, my nights at the performances of senior high music theatre camp, dance night at special needs camp ,staff camp photo, (which was always hilarious), lobster dinners at Kathy and Norms, my introduction to LLBean, my great adventures with Beth, Jessica, Alissa, Rosalea and Sarah and of course Walmart - Norm once told me I could get a job as a doorman at Walmart I was there so often, which my luggage reflected every time I left. Obviously I could go on and on but I most treasure the memories I have and they will stay with me forever. Thank you Mechuwana, Norm and everyone involved it was a life time experience I will value always.

I went to camp at Mechuwana for many years, starting with Family Camp in the 1970's, travel camp, swim camp, and finally Music camp from 79-83 (some people may remember me dancing in a grass skirt with coconuts on my chest, but we won't get into THAT...). I have many fond memories from those days, and am very happy that I now have two wonderful children to share them with. They have just started going to camp within the last few years, and they enjoy it as much as I did. I am currently working as a Telecom Systems Specialist, but am still active in the church choir.

I went to Mechuwana from 1994 - 2001. After the summer of 2001, my life went in a different direction and I chose not to return the next summer. I returned in 2/03 for my last camper experience. I attended the University of Maine at Farmington majoring in Rehabilitation Services. I plan on becoming a recreational therapist.

I've been coming to camp on & off since 5th grade, but started attending rallies regularly in 1998. I was a JC at Outpost Camp 1999 (I think) & Swim Camp 1999 (I think) & Young Adventurers in 2001. My last rally was in May 2002 (*SOB*) and I'm going to miss them like mad!! I won't be able to come to camp this summer, and have no idea when I'll be coming back, if at all :( In the fall, I'll be attending the University of Southern Maine, in Gorham, and you'd all better either write or visit to get me through those long hours of college study (Hahah.) Oh. And I'm ridiculously attractive. I mean really pretty. Stunning. You can't possibly have missed me. I bet you know me, take a chance & get in touch! Love you guys!!

I attended camp starting in 1986 off and on until 1991 as first a camper, audience member watching Music Theater productions, off season cleaning up the camp with my youth group and then rounding out my years at Rally Camp and as a Jr. Counselor with Swim Camp. I have come away with wonderful memories and am grateful for the experiences I shared with such amazing people! Thank you friends. I attended camp from 1987-1994. I went to Elem. First Timers, Clowning Camp, Swim Camp, Elem./Jr. High Music/Theatre Camp and Jr./Sr. High Music Theatre Camp, pretty much in that order.

I didn't forget, and I am coming back to Mechuwana in 2003 as a counselor once again, this time at Aquatics Camp. I came to Mechuwana as a counselor in Jr. High Music Theater Camp, and kept coming back, I have also been part of Sr. High Music Theater Camp, and Dean of Native American Camp -- there is truly no place like Mechuwana. I have run into my former campers at their work in the world, what a joy. The testimonies of the campers, old and young, show the rest of us the importance of this life changing experience.

I've been coming to camp for as long as I can remember and it has always been a home away from home. I began my journey at camp in 1995 as a young adventurers camper, followed by outpost, and then 5 years of music theatre. I've jr. counseled several camps and was on the youth council at rallies for two years. I owe everything I've got to Mechuwana, and it makes me so happy to be able to give back to it! (8/2005)

I was a camper starting way back in the late 70’s thru 1984, attending first Tent camps, then hiking camps, Jr/Sr high Tent/Village camps with my parents Art and Judy, as well as music theater camps. I remember being in Godspell, The Music Man, Oklahoma, South Pacific and several others. I was an active rallygoer, serving on the youth council as well. Then I worked on the waterfront from 1986-1988 as Assistant Waterfront Dir. After that, I strangely disappeared for 17 years. Thankfully, this year, I found my way back to camp, and I won’t be leaving again!

I came to Mechuwana in the early 80's with my cousin Jane (VanDerburgh) to attend Sr. High music camp. I ended up working there as kitchen help, assistant waterfront director, and environmental/ nature studies director (thanks for your training, Norm). Now I'm the mother of Iain, Kate, James, and Miriam, and employed as a teacher of emotionally disturbed children. Although I live in Ohio, I am a Mainer at heart still! (9/2006)

My first Mechuwana experience was Elementary Cabin Camp. (Don't even ask me to remember the year.) I'm pretty sure I went to more than one summer of Elementary Cabin, but it's all a blur to me right now. I do, however, remember attending Junior/Senior High Music Camp every summer except for my senior year when I went to Iowa with the DeSanctis family (and others) in the Partridge Family Bus for some Youth Convention...but I digress.....I have many fond memories of Mechuwana -- even the bug juice. I am currently living in San Diego where I sell real estate. (11/2008)

I missed out on camp as a kid, so when I started as a counselor, I made up for lost time! I started counseling with Jr. High Night Camp in 1993, and survived four years. I also counseled at Jr./Sr. High Special Needs Camp from 1993-1999, where I instigated more than one shaving cream fight. I had a great time at Mechuwana Sr. High Adventure Camp 2002. My wife, daughter and I currently live in Portland, where my wife and I are pastors. (7/2008)

I first came to Mechuwana in 1994. My mom went when she was younger, and since she's a music teacher, I went to a lot of the music camps! I had so much fun then, and I also went to a couple Jr. High Rallies. Then there were a few years when I didn't go. Adolescence is such a troubling time. But thanks to my sister, I went back with her to the Sr. High Rallies, and I can't tell you how much those meant to me. The people I met there were amazing and always so welcoming. I also JCed a couple camps as well as spending two summers at the Jr./Sr. High Music Theater camp. I've since graduated from high school, and it's always so exciting to visit everyone in the summer. I look forward to being apart of Mechuwana for many more years.

I attended camp in the mid 60's from 4th grade till I was senior in high school. Those years were some of the best memories of my life. Remembering the tents that we stayed in to the cabins, the war canoe and carrying it across the road when the others went through the culvert the camp fie across the road at the old barn and sleeping under the stars and especially the s'mores, making ice-cream with the hand crank machine. All great memories that I truly cherish.

I attended Camp Mechuwana from the late 1950's or early 60's through my high school graduation from Waterville HS in 1968.  During high school I participated in the hiking camp all four years with the Rev. John Neff as leader for several years.  We hiked in the White Mountain Presidential Range in New Hampshire as well as some portions of the Appalachian Trail in Maine.  I now live in Virginia and am a retired Special Education teacher (adapted Physical Education).  I am a volunteer with Special Olympics.  My athletes are very active, including participating in duathlons, triathlons and week-long biking/camping trips where they ride from 50-100 miles a day with me.  My email address comes from my three dogs-all dachshunds.

I started coming to Mechuwana way back when the big blue school bus (driven by Gary Akeley sometimes!) would load up in Presque Isle with kids and volunteers once a year and head south for the week. My first year as a camper was probably around 1980. I came to tent camps, then swim camps and finally Baxter Hike Camp (with my fearless leader Norman!). I was on permanent staff in 93, 94, 95, 97, 98 and 99. (7/2008)

I attended night camp from 94 to 98 and was a counselor at elem/jr high musical theater camp in 02. I'm will be graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology in May (05). I'm majoring in graphic design, with a minor in mass media visual communications. I have also been holding down several internships, including my favorite in Boston with an ABC affiliate, WCVB-TV which I did last summer. After graduation, I am moving to Boston with my boyfriend, Chris, where he currently attends school. I am still deciding between Boston Univ. for graduate graphic design, or finding a job there in my favorite city at a design studio or advertising agency. (1/05)

I started going to camp in February of 1999 for the rallies. I have been on permanent staff during the summers of 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2006. I am a middle school teacher in Windham. During the off-season you will find me at camp for the rallies as an adult chaperone or at The UPS Store where I have been employed for the past several years.

I came to Mechuwana for the first time during the summer of 2000 and returned for the next four summers. Camp was one of the best experiences of my life and I would seriously consider giving up a limb to go back to those days. I'm now attending the University of Maine pursuing a double major in Public Administration and Communication. I'd love to hear from some MT camp people and anyone else who wants to say hi for that matter!

I spent many wonderful summers at Pilgrim Lodge as a camper and junior counselor, so when Chip Simpson asked me to be a counselor at Young Adventurers Camp in 1993 I thought "why not?". Since then I have worked with Chip and his wife Laurie directing the Elem/Jr High Music Theatre Camp. Next summer will be my 12th year. I began counseling youth rallies in 1999 and took over as director of the program a few years later. Today, with Beth Dimond at the helm, I am able to plan and lead worship with a band of talented singers and musicians. Mechuwana is a place that I have shared with my two children, Zachary and Abigail, since both of them were old enough to remember. It has become a second home to them and has helped shaped them into the wonderful young man and woman that they are today. It is also the place that I go to relax on weekends. Me and 50-100 teenagers!!! (My friends all think I'm nuts).

I was a camper in 1995 at Elem. Swim camp and continued to go to Mechuwana for Elem. Swim and Jr. Music Theater camp for about three years. So in '98, I believe, I started going to Jr./Sr. Music Theater camp/ I also attended Sr. Rally camp '03. I went to rallies for years, which the wonderful Beth Dimond hosts. Thanks to Mechuwana I have a place to relax, have fun, meet new people, and have a positive experience. :)

I went to Mechuwana from about 1987-1992.  Mostly attending Music Theatre Camp, Arts & Crafts Camp and Rally Camp.  I was a lot more shy back then and those years and the people I met really made a difference in my life.  Sadly I've lost track of most of those friends, some of whom I was in contact with through 2000. Now I live in California, 45 minutes north of San Francisco, with my husband, our 4 parrots, 16 chickens and 10 ducks.  I am a Massage Therapist, running my own business, and am planning to expand to offer Herbology and Nutrition counseling in the form of workshops and seminars.

I was a camper and rallygoer from the early ‘80s through ’87. I have extremely fond memories of the times and friendships created during that period in my life. I especially loved Music Camps and the rallies! After college I lived in Manhattan for many years working in finance, and then moved back to Maine after 9/11. I now live in the thriving metropolis of Sangerville, where I operate a consulting business out of my barn! Maria and I have lived here now for two years with our 3 dogs and cat. Last year, we became Foster Parents and Crystal, our daughter, has been living with us for just over 1 year and she just turned 13. We hope to adopt her soon; being a parent is a trip! My sister, Suzann, now lives in Blue Hill with her husband, Fred, and they have a son, William, who is nearly 2 years old. Feel free to get in touch with me, it would be nice to hear from the Ghosts of Mechuwana!

I attended Mechuwana beginning in the late 1960's through the late 1970's in travel programs and programs that stayed at the campsite. One travel program I particularly remember was a biking one where we stayed at churches.  I am looking forward to digging through some of my old photographs to see if I can find names of individuals I can connect with.  Although I am no longer a Methodist, I have many warm memories of Mechuwana.  I live in East Winthrop, ME with my husband of 27 years.  We have 3 grown children, 2 shih-tzus, 2 cats, 9 pullets and 1 cockerel.  I work full-time for the Department of Education with a Bachelor's Degrees in Business Administration and Library/Information Technology from the University of Maine.

I spent many summers in the 80's at Mechuwana, traveling to Baxter for bike and hike camps, enduring 'night' camp, and finally Music Camp with my mom, Pam. My mother was a long time counselor and prankster at Mechuwana, and proudly wore her Mechuwana sweatshirt wherever she went. Even at her service, fellow counselors told tall tales of the fun they had after the kids went to bed... Throughout the year at home we all sang camp songs...attended rallies...and made postcards for the campers to send home. What wonderful memories. I can't wait to send my three young children in a few years, and am very excited at the prospect of being a volunteer counselor. I look forward to seeing 'Norm' again, and wonder what things may still be the same...

My first contact with Mechuwana was at a couple of work camps in 1982 and 1983 and Jr/Sr High Music Theater Camp in, I think '84, all with Bethany when she was still a toddler. I Counseled at a village tent camp somewhere in there, and at a cabin camp with Beth in '85 but then with two small kids it became too difficult. I returned as counselor at Music Theater Camp in, I think, '94 and counseled every year at an increasing number of camps (I was there all summer one year!) until '03 (missing the summer of '97 when we were all in Colorado for the summer), after which I couldn't come because of health reasons but have gotten meds straightened out finally and plan to return to Elementary Junior High Music Theater Camp in '07 and probably the, now usual, 3 per summer in '08. I also attended a lot of work weekends and sometimes weeks (mostly repairing screens!). Somewhere in there I began attending rallies, first Junior High, when Beth was attending, and later both Junior and Senior, which were soon all meeting at the camp. Camp's been a very important part of my life...what with moving regularly since my wife is a minister, and the always present problem of how closely to become related to parishioners, it's sort of been the most consistent spiritual home and friendship group I've had...and has been sorely missed over the past few years. In spite of moving further and further away it remains the United Methodist camp to which I feel most closely related; it's still home.

I started the son of the director in 1985 and rode around in a milk crate on the back of a moped and at that point I call camp my home. In 1989 my dad retired and I left camp for a few years. In 1992 I went to my first weeks of camp as a camper -- Peggy Weinzetl's swim camp. I did multiple camps each summer as a camper in the following years. The first camp I jr. counseled was Dan and Martha's Jr./ Sr. High Special Needs. I then took a Jr. counselor training and spent six or more weeks each summer jr. counseling. I was also a camper in there too going to Night camp and music theater camps as well as backpacking trips and working on maintenance and in the kitchen. When I started going to rallies I got involved in the youth council and spent the majority of my rallies planning and being a role model... I worked on permanent staff on the maintenance for one summer and then I took two full summers off and worked at home. After I graduated, I lost contact for while and I went out to NOLS. When I got back I worked at home for a while but I really wanted to be involved again and began chaperoning rallies. I was on permanent staff one and a half more summers as a life guard and Ropes Course Director. I still try to come back often and I keep in touch with many friends I've made here and I look forward to many happy years at Mechuwana.

I always went to camp, ever since I was old enough to go, starting in first timers and working my way up to young adventurers to music theater camp to swim camp and to senior rally camp. I went every single summer, and when I was old enough, I became a junior counselor and would stay all summer, working, playing and having the best time of my life. Camp was always a home away from home for me, the winter rallies were always what I looked forward to (even when I hit my head off a tree sledding backwards...) camp provided that special place where you could be yourself and not worry about any animosity at all. I was an awkward kid, camp helped me to become confident and strong enough to take on the world. Mechuwana will always be part of the foundation that made me who I am. I miss camp more than anything in the whole world, I haven't been back since 2003, since I started having to pay for school and such and working somewhere in the middle of nowhere during the summer. But there's always the hole, the loss of not going back to that place, to see all the tiles on the ceiling, to run around and point out all the ones I did or helped out on, I miss the lake and I miss the camp fires, I miss the songs, I miss Dave Swett's stories. I miss camp more than anyone would know and more than i even thought I could.

I spent many summers at Rally Camp and met a whole bunch of fabulous people! I think my last year was 1995. It is hard to believe that it has been ten years! Well, since then I have gotten married. Mechuwana Memories are of attending camp in the early 1950's. Our waterfront director was Mark Shedd and his wife Mary. Races on the lake in the war canoes. Ping pong tournaments with the Rev. Dartnell, what a wonderful person he was. He also spoke at my high school graduation at Caribou High School in 1955. Other memories, outdoors camp fires and singing, hikes, worship services outdoors, friends, hikes, friends and more friends.

I attended various camps from the time I was in 3rd grade right up to graduation. I went to just about every junior high and senior high rally that came up, you couldn't have missed me ;) Now I'm living in Portsmouth, NH, with my 2 cats and my doggie. I've graduated from college with a degree in Radiation Therapy and now work as a licensed RT(T) in Mass. Allo everybody! It's me, Bri Miller, (one of three Miller girls). I've been coming to camp since I was in third grade, but camp and I didn't have a committed relationship until I was in junior high, and since then we've been going steady. Yay! Anyway, on a more serious (and factual) note, I went to Young Adventurers camp in third grade, elem/jr high music theater at one point in time (I'm thinking 6th grade), rallies since 1997 (straight on thru till I graduated). Jr. High rally camp in 1998, and Creative Arts camp in 1999. I've also been a counselor at Special Needs camp every year since 1998 (haven't missed one yet, and the year I do is the year I'm either dead, or have broken every bone in my body). The best times in my life have been (and will be) spent at Mechuwana.

My memories of Mechuwana began in '97, when I started attending the rallies. I was also a junior counselor at Mom/Child camp the summer of 2000. I unfortunately had to stop attending camp in the fall of 2000. Camp holds a really special place in my heart, and so do all the wonderful people and friends that I met there. I miss everyone that I knew at Mechuwana, and you know who you are!! So, if the feeling's mutual, feel free to drop me a line. I'd love to chat, catch up, and reminisce about the golden camp days! :)

I *think* I was at Mechuwana in 1990,1991,1992,1993, and 1994. After spending several years in Charlottesville, VA I realized I hated the South, moved back to Maine with my husband, and am now living in Portland and working as a paralegal at one of the law firms downtown.

I attended Camp Mechuwana from 1949 or 50 through 1955 (except for 1952 when my mother wouldn't let me attend because of polio scares that year).  The two weeks I attended camp each year were the highlights of my childhood, I looked forward to them all year.  We did it all back then, camp wasn't divided into swimming, art, music, etc. sessions.  I loved to canoe, especially in the big "war" canoe, but best of all I loved the crafts with "Aunt Olive."  I loved the picnic supper on Sunset Hill, and the thrill of watching the sun go down.  I even remember one year that some of us were taken to see a Gilbert and Sullivan show at the theater in Monmouth.  I remember we would have foreign nationals in residence each year; the one I remember best was from India and she showed all the girls how to properly wrap a sari, a talent I remember to this day but have never had occasion to use!   After graduating from college in Maine, I went to Washington,DC to work and stayed there until 1996 when my husband and I (whom I met in DC) returned to my family home in Bremen.

Wow, this is great to have the web has really expanded our world. I remember Mechuwana going to Jr High Travel camp and Photography camp. I believe I was there in the mid 70's during what was then I believe the last week of camp designated as a work week. I was there 2 or 3 years. I helped take a tree down, paint, make a toy box for the sporting equipment among other things. I remember being up in the cabins away from the center and walking down to the main building and also going swimming.

(Brunswick class of 1994) Jr/Sr High Music Theater Camp and Rally Camp 1989-1994. Attended all but one rally from 1990-1994, and even rode the bus to New York for NEJ in '93 (that was an adventure). Cleaned up camp in the off-season with the BUMC youth group. I am so grateful for the friends I made, and the experiences I had, at Mechuwana. Anyone else ever get the urge to sing Johnny Appleseed before meals? Thank you Beth, for enabling us to catch up with campmates on-line. I married my college sweetheart in 2000, so my new last name is Lanter. Last spring I got my master's degree from Miami University, and I'm currently living outside Cincinnati, Ohio and working as a wellness & exercise coordinator at a nearby retirement community. I was a camper only one summer (I think it was either '85 or '86) but it was a great summer and a great experience. I began as a camper in elementary school ('83 or '84 I think) and have been a part of Mechuwana ever since! I became a counselor in 1991 with Sr. High Rally camp, and began as a dean with my husband, Nick in 1998. Our daughter Kianni began day camp in 2002, and Naissa began this summer. Jayden will be starting as a camper soon, too! My parents were deans at Mechuwana for many years, (Downeast Travel Camp) and it is so good to see the third generation of my family as a part of Mechuwana!

I discovered Mechuwana in 1998 as a missions camper from Massachusetts. I joined the permanent staff in 2000 as a kitchen staff worker, stayed again for the summer of 2001, and went to rallies in the off-season. The summer of 2002 I worked on the waterfront and met the Mechuwana Sea-monster. Summer of 2003 I was the Arts & Crafts director and the program director. Mechuwana has given me many great friends and a true "sanctuary" in knowing Jesus Christ. Today I teach a preschool music program, and I live in Halfmoon, NY with my hubby (Joseph) and my son (Jackson Dean).

Let's see....I have been coming to camp for a long time now. I am a true camp junkie I just simply get enough of the place or the people. I am also known for among other things my outgoingness, and my enthusiasm I have made quite a few life long friends. 2002 marked the start of my tenth year!!! I have been to the following camps as a camper: First Timers '93, Young Adventurers '94-'95, Elem. Swim '95, Elem./Jr. High Music Theater '96, Jr. High Rally '97-'99, countless winter camps and rallies. I am currently on the summer maintenance staff and am the dance DJ at the junior and senior high rallies.

I was sitting in church while my mom was playing the piano, like she did every Sunday, and the minister (Bob Leon) said that registration forms were available for Camp Mechuwana. The registration forms that were a different color every year and was one big fold out sheet of paper. My mom turned in her seat and pointed to me and mouthed the words "You can go this summer." That was in 1985. I have been there every summer since then in some capacity. As a camper, many swim camps in order to get my advanced swimmer card, Baxter Hike, Appalachian Trail Hike, Downeast Travel, and Mom/Child (as a mom). I was on staff 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004. I met Sam in 1999. We married in 2001. George was born in 2002 and spent his first summer at camp with Sam and I. We are still living in Pittston and I am teaching middle school math at Windsor Elementary School and starting the graduate program at Farmington this summer for Educational Leadership. Wow. I can't believe I found this! I went to Mechuwana, I think '93-96...I could be wrong about the years. I loved coming back and cried every time I had to leave. I was in the music program and did plays like Agape Land and Agape Land 2 or something. I was the Grape Joy of the Fruits of the Spirit. If I could be a child all over again and come back, I would. If I could be a counselor, I would. I am living in Florida now. I have so many memories being there. Of kitchen duty and trying to get out of it. Of the Owl Trail. Of the lake and taking the test to swim out there. Or the campfires and the Mechuwana song. I sing that every once in a while. Wow. Wowie-Wow!!

I'm what I like to call a 'Hardcore Mechuwana Camper'. I've been comin' to Mechuwana for 13 years now. I started with Day Camp, then First Timers, then 2 consecutive years of Young Adventurers, then Native American Camp, Jr. High Night Camp (that camp so totally reeked of awesomeness!), next I attended Fly Fishing/Canoe Camp, then I started what will soon be a 4-year streak of attendance @ the Jr./Sr. High Music/Theatre Camp. I also counseled Young Adventurers II for 4 years.

I've been around forever. I started coming to camp in the 4th grade or something like that. I've done just about every camp in some capacity or the other. I am working on my Master's degree currently at the Bangor Theological Seminary.

I was at Mechuwana and went to many junior high and senior high rallies during between 1983-1988. I remember good times with Bonnie Beach (where are you?!), Beth Dimond, MJ, and Steve Emerson. I can distinctly remember being a part of Flower Drum Song and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but it seems I was in one or two other productions that have slipped my mind. I'm now living in New Haven, teaching high school math in the New Haven Public Schools. I've been joyfully married to Brice Shipley for about eight years. It's been almost 20 years since I've visited Mechuwana, but would love to see all the old cabins and new improvements, as well as old friends!

I attended Music Camp from '82-'87, the South Pacific, Luanne, days. I am probably most noted for playing Joseph (yes, Joseph) in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Although I live in New York now, near Syracuse, my heart will always be with the state of Maine and I try to carry on the lessons learned at Mechuwana every day. Marriage to a police officer came in 1995 and we have two girls, ages 7 and 3. I am a 911 Dispatcher for the Onondaga County 911 Center and have been promoted to a supervisor this past spring. Currently I am assigned to the Training Division and spend my days training new people to help save lives. I am a member of my local Methodist church and hope to send my daughters to one of two state Methodist camps in a couple of years. I would love to hear from anyone who attended during my years. There are already a couple of names on the website I'll send an e-mail off to shortly. (7/2006)

I was a camper in the family camp in 1972 and 1973. I was also there in 1976 for the heritage camp. I have many happy memories of the camp. I have faith in God and in Camp Mechuwana in that order for young people. (4/2005)

I began my 11 year stint at Mechuwana in the Elem./Jr. High Music Theatre Camp during the premier of Sardines and Biscuits (I was the one who walked across the stage holding scene signs wearing a jester's costume). That was the year I became hooked on camp. I attended Elem./Jr. High Camp until 1996 when I switched to Jr./Sr. High Music Theatre Camp. My final year at camp, the summer of 2001, I worked as a counselor and choreographer for the production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I currently live in Indiana (a 17 hour drive to Mechuwana!) with my husband, Keith, and our two adorable kitties, Squidgy and Kaiser. I work as the Public Outreach Coordinator in the Governor's Office where I write newsletters and press releases. While I have not made it back to Mechuwana in 5 years, it holds a very special place in my heart. I look forward to returning one day to see the smiling faces of the friends and extended family I have missed. (10/2006)

I think I've been coming to camp since 1993ish(remember Jarod, I was this yiddle...lol...)Yeah my mom dragged me and our dog every year and I always woke up in the Commons with numb feet and Tomila in front of me. I have attended: Music theater (Elm./Jr. high: 3 years, Elm. 1) Creative arts since I can remember, Outpost, Soccer, Rally Camp, Jr. High adventure, and all that fantastic stuff, there's more but that is a lot to remember. As usual, I have made a mess of life, and been up to no good and lovin' it! E-mail me, I luv to hear from people...even if I don't know you, meeting new people is always interesting. Camp is like home away from home, to any of you who don't know me .... I think you'll find you soon will, I'm not going anywhere! Luv U All!! Best of luck!! (7/2008)

If the date on the slide was correct I was a camper the first year in 1949. I was first a Jr Counselor in 1958 and deaned for the first time in 1963. I was on staff in 1963 and 1964 as a permanent counselor. I was a counselor 10 weeks and a dean 1 in 1963. I repeated the next year except for taking one week off. I have helped at small group camps, swim camps, soccer camp, young adventurers, choral/instrumental and creative arts. I was an official dean for the first time in 38 years in 2003 although I had filled in on occasion. I am currently working on the camp archives, scanning and indexing all pictures, brochures, etc. The index will be by subject, date, and person and may be some 700+ pages when done.

You may remember me as "Oy" or the bunny in long johns as I was a Music/Theater camper for years. I started camp in '91 as a swim camper, which turned into many years of camping, jr. counseling, and permanent staff. (Swim Camp, Night Camp, Music/Theater, Rally Camp, Special Needs) "Always remember shiny spots are puddles..." I worked many weekends through out the year and was part of the first Youth Council for rallies. I am now living in Medford, MA searching for my next adventure. Camp will always hold a special place in my heart as will the people. (3/05)

I started working at camp in 1982 for David Broadbent. That first summer I was the gopher, which meant I did things no one else wanted to do. I worked again the next summer in 1983, then took a summer off to make some money. Paul Marshall asked me to work for him as his assistant and ropes course/trip leader which I did in 85,86 and 87. In 1988 I began graduate school in N.H, I felt that I had said goodbye for a while to Mechuwana -- at least until I had a full time job and could volunteer. Next thing I know Paul retires and I decide to apply. The rest, as they say, is history. I have been director from 1989 until today. I am married to Kathy and have three boys Dylan, Luke, and Ethan.

I went to day camp a few times, back in the day. And I went to my first real camp when I was 8, and that was Elem. Music theater. I then continued with what's now a tradition of going every summer. In order after Elem. Music theater is: Music Worship, Earth Stewardship, and what's now my 4th consecutive year of Jr./Sr. High Music Theater. I also JC'd Elem. Music Theater last year and Young Adventurers II this year (which I must say was the best week of my life.) I am now living in Gardiner, I have moved around a lot and the only place I always knew would be that same was camp, I want to thank God for the place and especially the people. Everyone I have met there has affected my life greatly some how, and I want to thank them all.

I went to tent camp around 1975 and then Music Theater Camp 1978-81 and many rallies, back when there were music rallies too. Mechuwana gave me gifts that I carry with me everywhere I go. It was wonderful that my kids Aaron and Crystal got to share the feeling and I know will carry the memories, as I have, with them the rest of their lives. I am moving to New Mexico soon and likely will never return to camp. Crystal is staying in Maine to become an English teacher. Aaron is in the Army and going to travel. May the kindness and love we found at Mechuwana be with us always.

I first attended camp in 1992, when I attended Elementary Swim camp with Steve Perry. How come we never got to wear those swim caps like they had on TV? Then I went to Elementary/Junior High Music Theater Camp. From then on I went to Jr./Sr. High Music Theater Camp I was in Godspell, Taller then Truth, Camping with Moses, Two by Two, and the 30th Anniversary Show. I was also a junior counselor for many years: Mom/Child Camp (just once), Elementary Music Theater Camp, Young Adventurers and special needs camp. (7/2008)

I was a camper starting in the early 80’s at Jr Music Camp and attended my last Sr High Music camp in 86. I was an active rallygoer and served on the youth council.  I moved to Tampa in 1990 and have been here ever since working in hotels as my career.  My time at rallies and summer camp have left lasting memories that I think about often.

At Mechuwana I was known as “Wally."  I was a camper in 1949, 50, 51, 52 & 53.  I was assistant cook in 1954 and worked on waterfront and grounds crew 1955, 56 & I think also 1957.Mechuwana has always been on my “pleasant memories” list.  I’ve been back to visit and see some of the expansion of facilities and programs several times. I am retired from TWA/American Airlines and live with my wife June in Kansas City, Missouri.

Laura Vitanza is currently living in Sedona, AZ. She loves the weather, and thanks every day she does not have to fight the snow! (at least for most of the years, she hears! :) ) She loved her days at Camp Mechuwana, remembering Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Fiddler on the Roof, Roots, & Wings, etc. She also remembers attending Creative Arts Camp, (I think) a swim camp, & of course, Music & Theatre Camp: much love & thank to Mitch & all those who made it possible, those memorable summers in the 1990's! Feel free, any past friends, campers, to say HELLO!

I started coming to camp back in 1990 to swim camp. I came to camp because it was the cool thing to do in my family. My two older brothers were campers too: Aaron and Ronnie Libby. I continued going to camp every summer and mainly went to Music Theatre camps. I was a junior counselor for a variety of camps, along with being on youth council for rallies. My mom, Laurie, comes to camp now too, as a volunteer. For 8 summers I worked at Mechuwana, doing a wide variety of jobs, including arts and crafts director, a lot of life guarding, and assistant director. I truly love Mechuwana and all it can give to an individual. I feel so lucky and proud to be a part of such a unique experience. This is a huge list of just alumni from Mechuwana, and it's amazing to think of all the young children who are still in the Mechuwana program. (7/2008)

I attended camp for the first time when I was in elementary school. At school I was in a class for the mentally handicapped. At camp, Bob Rand put me in with all the other elementary kids. I had some good counselors and always had a good and fun time at camp. I now work at Uplift Inc. in Gardiner as a receptionist.

I first started going to Mechuwana as a kid in the early 1980s and continued going every year up through high school, attending such camps as Christian Clowning, Outpost, Christian Adventure and Senior High Rally. Although many miles and many years have passed by since I've been back, the fond memories I have of great times and great friends made at Mechuwana remain close to my heart. (5/2004)

I started going to camp when I was 3. The only year I missed since was 1996, other then that, every year I've come back. I did mom/child camp for something like 8 years I think. Then I went to elm. music theatre. After that, I went to jr./sr. high music theatre. You all probably know me as that guy that does lights.... and stuff. I'm also a junior counselor, or, youth leader is it now? My way to try and give back. As well I go to as many of the rallies as I can fit in. I truly feel that without camp, I most definitely would not be who I am today. So to everyone at this surreal land, thanks so much! Please stay in touch!

Years Attended: early to mid-80's, I think '83-86. I am currently a senior at Univ. of Maine at Augusta through their distance education program majoring in Library Information and Technology. All my classes are online. I am moving back to Maine in May after 3 years in NJ. UGH! I'll be looking for the library job of my dreams there, or at least a job, period. Most people say I'm not your typical librarian. I take that as a compliment. I still love Duran Duran, though they have taken a back seat to life in general. I cannot help but think about camp and grin like an idiot. It was great. It was such a huge part of growing up for me. Please, anyone I was at camp with, get in touch. I'd love to hear from you!
