A Message from the Director

Over the years Mechuwana has had many friends whose contributions go largely unnoticed or recognized. Some of them work behind the scenes raising scholarship money and awareness of our programs at their churches. Some bring or sponsor children from their communities or schools. Some collect soup labels or Labels for Education. And some give a day or two here at camp working on projects, just to give a few examples.  We have also had many businesses that have given time and materials saving us thousands and thousands of dollars.

Last month, a great friend of Mechuwana died. His name was Ken Frost. Ken owned and operated Frost and Sons Construction in Monmouth, Maine. Over the past three decades, Ken has worked on countless projects at camp: building roads, digging foundations, putting in almost all of our septic fields and tanks. He was the main contractor who built both the soccer field and basketball courts.  Ken always helped us out with costs, keeping it as low as possible with every job he did at camp – donating many hours of his time. No matter what other projects he was working on, he would always drop everything and help us out day or night. He told me once, "Don't ever worry about calling me, Norm. I'll take care of camp."

When my boys were younger, they loved to watch Ken work with his "big" equipment.  He always had time to stop what he was doing and let them take a close up look at the machines.  He even let them ride in his truck from the top of the camp road to the bottom, much to their delight. When he was at Mechuwana he always had time to talk or help us out no matter how busy he was.Mechuwana would not be where it is today without people like Ken. I am personally so very grateful for all that he did for Mechuwana.

Wishing you all a happy holiday season!

God bless,
- Norman Thombs, Director
